The Heart of Wexford

This collection of films was recorded from pupils from Coláiste Abbain in Adamstown, Co. Wexford between January and May 2015. These stories, many ancient in their origins, combined with contemporary references and the storyteller's own character, highlight the incredibly rich oral history which still exists in County Wexford to this day.

The two compilations which feature on this DVD are derived from three collections which were recorded by Michael Fortune in Counties Wexford, Offaly and Mayo between 2005 and 2008. The fourteen minute compilation was compiled in August 2014 for a screening in Belfast and since then the three minute edit was produced.

This is a short collection of folklore which was recorded with young traveller girls from Taghmon, Co. Wexford in 2009 and 2010.  The title ‘Never Pick A Go-Go Off The Ground’ is a contemporary variant of the traditional superstition relating to finding a comb which belonged to the banshee. The recordings were made by Michael and his partner Aileen Lambert.

Bud Mack’s Hill

Bud Mack’s Hill was recorded with young people from County Cavan during the summer of 2012. The recordings were produced for Trans-Art Cavan and funded by The International Fund for Ireland, The Arts Council and Cavan County Council. The project was launched in the Cavan Institute in Cavan town on the 4th of August 2012. 

The name of the collection is derived from a hill in Cavan town which the young people who live nearby claim is haunted. The hill, known locally as Bud Mack’s is believed to have been used for public hangings in previous centuries.

A screening copy was produced for the launch which took place in 2012, however no copies were made available to the public. The collection has been   re-mastered and re-produced onto DVD in 2016.

Half for You, Half for Me is a collection of superstitious beliefs from County Wexford relating to the month of May.  This compilation is derived from two larger collections entitled which were recorded in two centres for older people in Raheen and Castlebridge, County Wexford in 2006.

Eggs In The Drills is a collection of superstitious beliefs which were recorded in Cahir Day Care Centre, Cahir, Co. Tipperary, in April 2008. The work was recorded by Michael as part of the 2008 Bealtaine Festival and was officially launched in Cahir Day Care Centre on Wednesday the 8th of May 2008.

This is a collection of local stories and superstitions as told by children from The Island and Moyross areas of Limerick City. The collection was recorded by Michael and Aileen Lambert as part of Young EV+A and The Cuisle Poetry Festival in 2004 and 2005 and was launched in March 2005, in the handball alley which featured in the children’s stories.

This is a collection was recorded by Michael in Grantstown Day Care Centre, Wellingtonbridge, Co. Wexford. A compilation was produced for the launch which was officially launched by Dr. Diarmaid Ó Muirithe in the centre on the 17th of May 2005.
My Grandfather Was 
 Taken By The Fairies

My Grandfather was taken by the Fairies is the title of a six-part recording that centres on Fortune’s mother, along with six different members of his family, relating superstitious accounts concerning other family members and neighbours.  Recording took place between October 2005 and August 2006 in rural County Wexford.

Spoken Treasure is a collection of ancient and contemporary uperstitious beliefs and rituals as told by people from the Castlebridge area of Co. Wexford. The collection was recorded and produced by Michael with participants from Castlebridge Day Care Centre between Sept. and Nov. 2006.

This collection was recorded as part of an intergenerational project conducted with traveller women and girls from Bunclody, Co. Wexford. The collection featured a wealth of superstitions and beliefs as well as a comprehensive collection of ‘gammon’ and traditional songs from the people involved. This collection of superstitious beliefs were recorded by Michael throughout Co. Offaly in 2010. Recording took place in Tullamore, Birr, Clara, Edenderry and Ballingar. The collection was funded by an Arts Council ‘Commission Award’ and supported by Offaly County Council, Anam Beo and the HSE.

This collection features two men, John Murphy and Ned Kavanagh from the Kilmuckridge area of County Wexford. The recording was undertaken in July 2015 in John's yard the camera captures the natural conversation between two neighbours as they re-count stories from the places around which they live. Recorded as part of the About This Place project.
Beyond the Windy Road

This was produced as part of a larger project entitled About This Place and features a collection of folklore from men and women from the Taghmon area of County Wexford. The recordings were made in October 2015 and the produced films were screened locally in December 2015 at the launch of the larger project. A compilation from all three recordings was made and this was shown at the official launch and is included on this DVD.
The Murneen Tuck

The Murneen Tuck is a collection of folklore from the Castletown area of North Wexford. The recordings were made as part of a larger intergenerational project which Michael produced in the local school between 2014 and 2015 entitled ‘Our Stories’ and was produced as part of Wexford County Council's 'Artist in the Community Scheme' and supported by Wexford County Council, Castletown Liam Mellows GAA club and Scoil Ghormáin Naofa, Castletown.

The short collection was recorded by Michael Fortune with people from around County Donegal over three days in late September 2010.

The recordings were conducted with six groups of people from throughout the county as part of  and features a collection of calendar based folklore from the county.

This collection was recorded in five Catholic and Protestant primary schools in Letterkenny and Derry  between 2010 and 2011. The recordings are edited into one narrative which highlights the shared storiesbetween all the communities and celebrates the children’s re-telling of story in relation to their own experience, imagination and connection to place.

This is a collection of superstition and belief which was recorded and produced by Michael in June 2016 with residents from Marion Court and Morton Street in Clonmel, County Tipperary. Featured in this collection are a variety of redundant and practiced beliefs which have been edited into a sixty minute compilation. The collection was commissioned by The Junction Festival in 2016 and supported by Clonmel Voluntary Housing Association and Tipperary County Council.
